Black History Month
has been observed since 1987. It promotes the history and contributions that Black people with origins in Africa, the Caribbean, North and South America and other Black communities around the world have made to the UK and global society. We want to remember the black voices and stories which were overlooked and marginalised and we want to encourage positive awareness about Black History.
This year’s theme for Black History Month is “Reclaiming Narratives,” and marks a significant shift towards recognising and correcting the narratives of Black history and culture. By emphasising “Reclaiming Narratives,” we shine a brighter light on our stories, allegories, and history.
To a member of the All Souls parish family
Do you have any photographs of family members who first came to Great Britain in your home archives?
Could you scan them (or bring them to me and I'll scan them) with a short description:
what are their names, where did they come from (country, city), when did they come, and what is a short story about them?
In this way, we could create a map of our shared history.

PRAYER
Lord God, Creator of our wonderful world, and its beautiful people.
We thank you for Black History Month and the opportunities to celebrate the myriad contributions
that Black Britons have made to this country over the centuries.
May this month be an opportunity for everyone to hear more about those men, women and children
whose stories have previously gone unheard.
We consider these stories of struggle, suffering and success,
and thank you for giving those brave individuals the courage, strength and faith to both survive and then thrive.
We particularly think of those Black Christians whose faith has helped to transform the spiritual climate of these lands.
This we ask in Jesus’ wonderful name. Amen.
